UCC named #1 for the world’s best universities for recycling and sustainability

Times Higher Education has ranked universities around the world on how they are committing to some of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG No 12 looks at responsible consumption and production.

Based on the analysis of everything from research to recycling, University College Cork (UCC) was named as top university for recycling and sustainability.

UCC was the first recipient of a Green Flag from the Foundation for Environmental Education. Students at University College Cork (UCC), set up a Green Campus programme to improve recycling facilities and address waste management around the grounds in 2007. Since the programme was set up there have been many positive outcomes including;

  • Carbon emissions have reduced by 36%.
  • 2,500 trees have been planted on campus
  • The number of people cycling to the university has increased by 90%
  • There’s been a 700% increase in recycling through its own sustainability programme.
  • The Library has had an 8% reduction in energy use
