Why is Manual Handling Training so important?

Lower back pain affects approximately 80% of the population at some stage in their lives. The HSA have stated that 1/3 of all reported injuries have been as a result of manual handling. The effects can be life changing leading to chronic illness and in some cases disability. By law employers are required to ensure all employees have received manual handling training with refresher training required every 3 years.

In a recent case an employee who suffered a disc injury at work claimed that the system of work was unsafe and that he had not been adequately trained. The Judge was in agreement and awarded him €415,000 in damages.

As a general principle of prevention, where possible manual handling should always be avoided. Sometimes this is not possible and thus appropriate organisational measures such as training and knowledge on the appropriate means, in particular mechanical equipment must be known
