Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Heartsaver AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators): The Life-Saving Devices that Everyone Should Know How to Use!

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is when one’s heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.

In Ireland, 5,000 people are estimated to suffer sudden cardiac arrest each year. That’s 13-14 people Every Day! Out of these 5,000 people only 1 person a day survives.
Survival rates following a cardiac arrest are directly related to time it takes to begin resuscitation and particularly defibrillation. Without immediate treatment, death can occur within minutes. However, with treatments such as CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (Heartsaver AED ), provided by someone who has completed CPR/AED training survival rates can triple! This is what is called a return of spontaneous circulation or ROSC.

What is an automated external defibrillator (AED)?

An AED is a lightweight, portable device that checks a person’s heart and delivers an electric shock if it has stopped beating normally. An AED is the most effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.

Where can I find a Heartsaver AED?

AED’s are strategically placed throughout communities in areas such as GP practices, sports clubs, airports and shopping centres.
Chris Mee Group’s offices in Cork, Dublin and Ringaskiddy all have AED’s and Staff with automated external defibrillator (AED) certification

I’m not a paramedic – Can I use an AED?

When first introduced in the 1980’s AED’s weighed almost 6kg and were used exclusively by trained professionals.
Modern AED’s are created with the layperson in mind. Though every unit is slightly different, in general the unit will guide the everyday person through a cardiac emergency with simple, step-by-step instructions.
By analysing the patient’s heart rhythm, the AED will determine if a shock is necessary, choose the correct time and deliver the appropriate shock.

The Importance of automated external defibrillator training

Despite wide availability, many people still do not know what AED’s are or how to use them.
