Course Objectives

  • To instruct participants in mounting, operation, handling and storage of abrasive wheels.
  • To demonstrate to participants the use of an abrasive wheel in a practical demonstration.

Target Audience

The course is intended for fitters and operators who use abrasive wheels, as defined in legislation.

Course Contents

The Safety in Industry Act. Schedule No 30. (Abrasive Wheels) 1982 places an obligation on all Employers of places where Abrasive Wheels are used, to ensure that only Trained, Competent and Appointed personnel mount the appropriate wheels in the machines.

This legislation was deemed necessary due to the serious injuries and fatalities resulting from the use of machines that were subjected to inappropriate use or incorrect mounting procedures.

The presentation is enhanced by the use of Electric, Petrol Driven and Pneumatic Machines as well as disassembled parts. A large variety of abrasive wheels are compared to ensure that the participants understand the specification codes.

Each participant will properly mount wheels or points in four machine types as part of the course assessment. A brief knowledge test follows.

Participants are assessed through a short written examination and practical.
